Arecibo radio telescope goes dark after mysterious destruction
Radio astronomy is the study of the universe through analysis of celestial objects' radio emission - the longest-wavelength, least energetic form of radiation on the electromagnetic spectrum.
The Arecibo Observatory is facing months of costly repairs after Hurricane Maria struck in September.

We mentioned back in August that a cable failure at the iconic Arecibo Observatory caused significant damage to the dish of the radio telescope.Sadly, a second cable at the radio observatory has failed, and the famous 1000-foot diameter radio telescope will have to be demolished.Arecibo was once the largest single-dish radio telescope in the entire world and has been in service for 57 years.

The 1,000-foot-wide radio telescope at Puerto Rico's Arecibo Observatory will take a closer look at a red dwarf star known as Ross 128 after picking up what one astronomer said were "some very peculiar signals" during a 10-minute observing session in May.

Astrophotographer Phil Hart captured a mesmerizing series of images featuring an unbelievable, yet natural, blue sheen streaking through a sea of saltwater. The bioluminescence effect is the result of a defensive reaction employed by microorganisms in the Gippsland Lakes in Australia. Their radiant reflex is similar to the luminescent jellyfish found in the British Columbian coast. The tiny creatures, called Noctiluca scintillans, emit a bright blue light in an effort to warn its fellow algae
